Back in the day, Bob Geldof re-wrote the rules when, with the Boomtown Rats, he created a classic slice of piano-based rock in the shape of 'I Don't Like Mondays'. 25 years on, Keane have created a masterful rock album without a single guitar in sight or, indeed, sound.
Producer Mark 'Spike' Stent has given the album a contemporary feel with an electronic groove underlying several tracks. Tom Chaplin's angelic voice beautifully complements Tim Rice-Oxley's piano/keyboard skills, resulting in one of the most uplifting albums of the year.
Argument has raged as to whether Keane are a rock group or a maudlin pop-group that is the antithesis of rock. Now, many rock groups are known to smash up their guitars on stage. Of course, for their next show they have to go out and buy new ones. No such problems for Keane – they are so rock 'n' roll that when they threw away their guitars, they never even bothered to replace them!
Posterity should see 'Hopes and Fears' go down as one of the great debut albums - whatever genre you like to call it!!
