You'd be forgiven for thinking that Williams, Goodwin & Williams were somebody to contact for legal advice but, in fact, they are the multi-talented trio behind Manchester band, Doves.
Three years on from their platinum selling, critically acclaimed album "The Last Broadcast", comes their awe-inspiring, anthemic follow up "Some Cities". Recorded with Ben Hillier (Blur – "Think Tank", Elbow – "Cast of Thousands") it was intentionally conceived as a shorter and more forceful record than its predecessors.
It appears to put the band where we (and they) are most at home, sitting comfortably between the dark and brooding "Lost Souls" and the riff-driven indie-pop of "The Last Broadcast". Pounding drums, chunky basslines and riffs aplenty are inevitably the order of the day yet again.
Title track "Some Cities" is the epitome of this and opens the album in typical fashion. This is swiftly followed by the stomping first single "Black and White Town" and the euphoric "Walk in Fire".
Of course, in true Doves style, it has its darker moments too. Journeying soundscape "The Storm" and the majestically atmospheric "Ambition" are the pick of tracks that remind us why we first fell in love with band.
Like most great albums, "Some Cities" is a slow-burner and, as such, may well fail to capture the imagination of the casual listener. Is that such a bad thing? I think not. It's good to have secrets!
